this project seeks to contextualise the naming practices of colonial academics which were often undertaken with no consideration for–or were actively pursuant of–the eradication of existing Indigenous and folk names for plants and animals (and thereby existing relationships). By highlighting the year of first known use of a variety nouns used for nonhumans, and placing them alongside other words also used for the first time in the same year, the project is a means of counter-defining the systems and institutions that named them. In doing so, it sets these words within the wider context of the English speaking cultures out of which they emerged, and is an attempt to both deconstruct and undermine the naming practices that are still so influential today.
